Learn everything about emergency stop switches including types, applications, wiring methods, contact configurations and how to choose the right safety switch for industrial machines.
An emergency stop switch (E‑Stop switch) is a manually operated control device designed to immediately stop hazardous machine operations in emergency situations in order to prevent injury or equipment damage.
It is typically a red mushroom‑head push button with a yellow background and operates using normally closed (NC) contacts within a safety control circuit.
Emergency stop switches are required in industrial machinery under ISO 13850 safety standards.

Most emergency stop switches use Normally Closed (NC) contacts for safety circuits.
Normal Condition:
NC Contact Closed → Safety Circuit Active → Machine Running
Emergency Pressed:
NC Contact Opens → Circuit Interrupted → Machine Stops
For higher safety levels, emergency stop buttons are typically connected to safety relay systems or monitored contactors.
The most common industrial emergency stop design. The large red actuator allows quick operation and fast emergency response. Suitable for machine panels.
The button locks after pressing and requires manual twisting to reset. Prevents accidental restart and improves safety.
A key is required to reset the emergency stop, providing additional security for restricted access areas.
Designed for harsh environments requiring IP65, IP67 or IP68 protection levels.
The actuator is the part pressed by the operator. Common styles include mushroom head, illuminated and key release designs.
Common contact configurations include:

Emergency stop switches are typically wired in series with the control circuit:
Power Supply → E‑Stop (NC) → Safety Relay → Contactor → Motor / Controller
Dual‑channel wiring is recommended for high‑level industrial safety systems under ISO 13849 safety categories.

| Contact Type | Meaning | Application |
|---|---|---|
| NC | Normally Closed | Safety shutdown circuit |
| NO | Normally Open | Auxiliary signal |
| NO + NC | Combined contacts | Control and monitoring |
Consider machine type, operating conditions, dust exposure, water presence and temperature requirements.
Common mounting hole sizes include 16mm, 19mm, 22mm, 25mm and 30mm.
Available protection levels: IP54, IP65, IP67, IP68.
Check voltage rating, current rating and contact arrangement before selection.
